How is luggage sorted for connecting flights?
“Most of the time, connecting bags are taken off planes, brought back to the terminal, loaded back into the baggage system to be sorted,” Mayerowitz says. “However, with a short connection, there are special tugs and carts that bring suitcases from one plane directly to another.
If your flights were booked under one ticket, your bags will be checked through to your final destination. If your flights were booked under separate tickets, you will need to collect your bags and recheck them before your connecting flight.
Avoid tight layovers
Ideally, you want direct, non-stop flights if you want to avoid your luggage getting lost at the connections. The longer the time between flights, the less chance your luggage will get left off the next plane during the changeover.
If you have booked your entire journey on a single ticket, your bags are typically automatically transferred between flights. This means that you don't have to worry about collecting your bags and re-checking them during your layover.
When all your flights have the same Order Number or reservation code, it is generally not necessary. Even if you have to change airplanes during the connection, your baggage will be transported by airport baggage personnel, and you only have to pick it up at the destination airport.
The easiest way to check if your baggage is transferred or not is to look at the label that the airline employee attaches to your bag when you check it in at the airport. The label will show where the bag is headed to. If it says the final destination of your journey, your bag is transferred automatically.
However, if you were on a connecting itinerary with more than one airline, the claim must be filed with the operating carrier of your last flight because that airline is ultimately responsible for delivering your bag to you, even if the bag never made it into its system.
Rank | Airport | Claims per 100,000 Passengers: Property Loss |
---|---|---|
1 | John F. Kennedy International Airport | 1.93 |
2 | Miami International Airport | 1.48 |
3 | Los Angeles International Airport | 0.81 |
4 | Norfolk International Airport | 0.70 |
American Airlines is the number one worst airline for losing or damaging your luggage, with 5.34 incidents per 1,000 bags. Although it's a low percentage compared to the total number of bags checked, American Airlines still takes the dubious distinction of being the airline most likely to lose your luggage.
“Most of the time, connecting bags are taken off planes, brought back to the terminal, loaded back into the baggage system to be sorted,” Mayerowitz says. “However, with a short connection, there are special tugs and carts that bring suitcases from one plane directly to another.
Will my luggage get checked through to my final destination?
Airlines have what is known as a “through-check baggage” policy, which means that when you have a connecting itinerary with the same airline or with partner airlines, your checked bags will be automatically forwarded to your final destination.
If you've booked two flights separately, in most cases you'll need to pick up your checked bags and check-in for your connecting flight. If so, simply exit through Arrivals and check-in at Departures.
In general, most airlines aim to transfer luggage within a few hours for international flights and within a shorter time frame for domestic flights. It's always a good idea to check with your airline or the airport's customer service for specific information about your layover.
A baggage handling system is a type of conveyor system installed in airports that transports checked luggage from ticket counters to areas where the bags can be loaded onto airplanes.
For the safety and security of passengers, the TSA screens all checked luggage. In some cases, the staff checking luggage must open it as part of the screening process. If a bag or suitcase is not locked, TSA staff will simply open it and check its contents.
A layover is the time you spend at the airport between two flights. A connecting flight is the next flight in your itinerary that you're waiting at the airport to take.
In most cases, you'll receive your boarding pass for your connecting flight already when you check in for your first flight. This means you don't have to check in again for your next flight. If you haven't received it, you can go to the transfer desk or kiosk of the airline you're flying with to collect it.
Layover Duration Doesn't Matter
Whether your layover is a few hours or overnight, the airline will still transfer your bags to the next flight. Baggage handlers at the connecting airport have a limited amount of time to unload and reload bags onto the appropriate aircraft.
If you miss a connecting flight through no fault of your own, in most cases you have the right to be rebooked for free on the next available flight.
If you must check your suitcase, try to book a non-stop flight whenever possible — especially if you're flying international. According to SITA, the mishandling rate on international routes is 8.7 bags per thousand passengers; on domestic routes, it's 1.85 bags per thousand.
How much do airlines have to pay for lost baggage?
For domestic flights, the maximum liability amount is $3,800, according to DOT regulations, while it's around $1,780 for international flights. Airlines may decide to reimburse you for more than this, but they aren't required to do so.
The rate of mishandling bags was even worse this year: Airlines lost or damaged 93,275 more bags from January through September of 2023 compared with the same period one year earlier, according to the same report.
Unclaimed baggage left at the airport is ultimately auctioned or sold at a lost luggage store like the mega-center in Scottsboro, Alabama. Only there's one catch, sometimes it isn't abandoned or unclaimed luggage that ends up there – it may be your lost luggage.
How long does it usually take to find lost luggage? This would largely depend on the airline, season, and circ*mstances of your situation. While it usually ranges from a few hours to a few days, in rare circ*mstances it could take weeks to recover lost luggage.
The top twenty most complained about airlines for mishandled luggage are below. Aer Lingus, British Airways and EasyJet were the most complained about UK and Ireland carriers, while Frontier Airlines, American Airlines and United Airlines were the US airlines with the most customer complaints around luggage care.
