Why do some people have money problem?
For some people, previous experiences of poverty or financial abuse can make them hesitant to spend money, even when they have the means to do so. These experiences can create a lasting fear of not having enough money or losing control over one's finances.
If you're feeling low or depressed, you may lack motivation to manage your finances. It might not feel worth trying. Spending may give you a brief high, so you might overspend to feel better. You might make impulsive financial decisions when you're experiencing mania or hypomania.
The high cost of living, wealth inequality and job market uncertainty have all contributed to financial vulnerability, even among wealthy families. Concerns about personal debt, including credit card, auto loan and medical debt, are significant sources of financial stress.
It may be that you have too much credit card debt, not enough income, or you overspend on unnecessary purchases when you feel stressed or anxious. Or perhaps, it's a combination of problems. Make a separate plan for each one.
It's common to worry about money, but some people have an irrational fear of spending money, says Aimee Daramus, PsyD, a licensed clinical psychologist and author of “Understanding Bipolar Disorder.” The phobia of spending money is called chrometophobia .
The term is contentious among mental health professionals and as of 2023, money disorder is not a clinical diagnosis in either the DSM or ICD medical classifications of diseases and medical disorders.
We find that about half of the variation in financial distress is genetically influenced, and personality and cognitive ability are associated with financial distress through genetic and within-family pathways.

If assisting someone else is overtaxing your time, energy, or resources—stop! Even if you agreed to do something, if the cost becomes too great, whether that's financial or emotional, you can back out or adjust how much you can help. If you are harming yourself, that is not helping.
