How does checked baggage work with connecting international flights?
If you checked a bag, you'll have to collect it from baggage claim from the international flight. You'll need to clear customs and immigration. Next, you'll recheck your luggage for the domestic flight. Finally, you'll need to go through Transportation Security Administration screening.
If you have booked your connecting flights independently, the airline is under no obligation to transfer your baggage to your connecting flight. In this case, you will need to collect your baggage after your first flight and re-check your baggage before your connecting flight.
If you're in a hurry, the short answer is usually yes. Airlines will typically transfer your checked baggage to your final destination airport for you.
Most (but again, not all) airports connect international terminals airside. When you're connecting from an international flight to a domestic one, you'll always have to exit and reenter security as you'll need to go through customs and immigration (unless you have gone through preclearance aboard, which is rare).
International luggage size standards are mostly weight based. 50 pounds is the usual weight limit. The largest checked international luggage size allowed is 62 linear (total) inches. Typically, a standard checked luggage size wavers around 27 x 21 x 14 inches.
When you purchase a connecting flight, checked baggage is usually forwarded to your final destination, and will change planes when you do. The agent at check-in will usually ask if you want your luggage checked through to your last stop.
If you've booked two flights separately, in most cases you'll need to pick up your checked bags and check-in for your connecting flight. If so, simply exit through Arrivals and check-in at Departures.
When do you go through customs on international flights? Usually, you go through customs when you exit the airport at your final destination. However, if you have a layover in a different city in your destination country, you may need to go through customs before your connecting flight.
When you're traveling outside of the United States, we suggest arriving at least 3 hours prior to your departure. You must be checked in at least 1 hour before your scheduled departure.
You might have to go through customs during a layover, especially if your layover is in the Schengen Area (which consists of most countries in the EU). For example, if your final destination is Paris, France, but you have a layover in Madrid, Spain, you will actually go through customs in Spain, not France.
Do international flights wait for connecting passengers?
The short answer is sometimes, but not always. Airlines may or may not hold a plane for connecting flyers depending on the circ*mstances. In this in-depth guide, we'll explore the key factors that determine if your connecting flight will wait or depart on time.
If the airline is responsible for you missing your connection they are obligated to get you on the first available flight to your final destination. It is best to speak to airline staff and have them arrange this. In rare cases, should the airline not be able to find you a substitute flight, you can book one yourself.
If you have been delayed for more than five hours and no longer wish to travel then you are entitled to a refund. If you are a transfer passenger and missed your connection flight because your first flight was delayed, you are also entitled to a flight back to your original departure point.
When entering the United States from overseas, you must obtain your luggage and bring them through Customs and Border Protection (CBP). You will need to check them back into the airlines to make your next flight. Baggage not obtained after your international flight will not get to your final destination.
Layover Duration Doesn't Matter
Whether your layover is a few hours or overnight, the airline will still transfer your bags to the next flight. Baggage handlers at the connecting airport have a limited amount of time to unload and reload bags onto the appropriate aircraft.
If your destination airport is indicated (e.g. MIA), then your luggage is checked through to your final destination. If the airport indicated is CDG or ORY, you need to collect your luggage in Paris and check it in again.
During layovers, your checked bags are typically transferred automatically to your final destination. You don't have to worry about collecting your bags and rechecking them.
Checking through baggage on connecting flights
That means your baggage will automatically be transported to your destination airport without you having to do anything when connecting to another flight.
When you get your bag tags, make sure that before you board your flight, stop at the gate and ask the agent if he or she can make sure your bags were scanned. It takes seconds but you'll then know right away if your bags have been loaded onto your flight. And do that again at your connecting airport.
You'll go through customs and immigration both ways on an international trip—when you arrive in the foreign country you're visiting, and again when you return to your home country from abroad.
How can I get through international customs faster?
- Fill out the forms fast. You do not need to write quickly but you should try and fill out all customs or immigration control forms as soon as possible. ...
- Take the stairs, not the elevator. People love the comfort of elevators. ...
- Have your documents ready.
Most airlines recommend arriving at the airport three hours before departure for international flights. It's common for international flights to start boarding earlier than domestic flights (the aircraft are often larger and have higher passenger capacities), which accounts for the earlier recommendation.
This is because international flights can have additional check-in requirements, like passport verification, that need to be completed before you receive your boarding pass. Further, international flights tend to begin their boarding process 15 to 30 minutes earlier than domestic flights due to the larger plane size.
The Bag Drop desks open at the latest 2 hours before the scheduled flight departure time and closes 40 minutes before the scheduled departure time unless you are notified otherwise before flight departure. Please check in your baggage as early as possible.
What is a good connection time? Travel advisers say there's a lot to take into account when booking connecting flights, but a general rule of thumb is 60-90 minutes between domestic flights and at least two to three hours for international itineraries.
