Which of the 3 credit scores is most important?
FICO scores are generally known to be the most widely used by lenders. But the credit-scoring model used may vary by lender. While FICO Score 8 is the most common, mortgage lenders might use FICO Score 2, 4 or 5. Auto lenders often use one of the FICO Auto Scores.
The primary credit scoring models are FICO® and VantageScore®, and both are equally accurate. Although both are accurate, most lenders are looking at your FICO score when you apply for a loan. There's a lot to learn about credit scores and credit reports and having more than one credit score can get confusing.
No credit score from any one of the credit bureaus is more valuable or more accurate than another. It's possible that a lender may gravitate toward one score over another, but that doesn't necessarily mean that score is better.
Of the three main credit bureaus (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion), none is considered better than the others. A lender may rely on a report from one bureau or all three bureaus to make its decisions about approving a loan.
FICO® Scores☉ are used by 90% of top lenders, but even so, there's no single credit score or scoring system that's most important. In a very real way, the score that matters most is the one used by the lender willing to offer you the best lending terms.
One credit bureau isn't more accurate than another, rather, they may simply have different methods of calculating your credit score. It's important to note that all three bureaus are used widely in the U.S. None of them are more “important” than the others.
The most accurate credit scores are the latest versions of the FICO Score and VantageScore credit-scoring models: FICO Score 9/10 and VantageScore 3.0/4.0. It is important to check a reputable, accurate credit score because there are more than 1,000 different types of credit scores floating around.
Most landlords partner with one of the three major U.S. credit bureaus: TransUnion, Experian, or Equifax. These background checks will actually reveal much more about a prospective tenant than just their credit score; the goal is to discover any suspicious financial activity in the applicant's background.
Equifax and Experian are the most commonly used credit bureaus by auto lenders. They offer services that are directed specifically at the auto industry, and each gets a portion of their revenue from the industry.
One of the biggest reasons for a credit score drop is a missed or late payment. If you have perfect credit and hit a financial roadblock, a 30-day late payment can drop your credit score by up to 100 points. Typically, creditors won't report a late payment until it's at least 30 days late.
Why is my FICO score 100 points lower than Credit Karma?
Why is my FICO® score different from my credit score? Your FICO Score is a credit score. But if your FICO score is different from another of your credit scores, it may be that the score you're viewing was calculated using one of the other scoring models that exist.
The two big credit scoring models used by auto lenders are FICO® Auto Score and Vantage. We're going to take at look at FICO® since it has long been the auto industry standard. What is a FICO credit score? FICO is an acronym that stands for: Fair Isaac Corporation, the company that developed the FICO® credit scoring.
Why should I check all 3 bureau credit reports and scores? Information reported to each of the 3 bureaus can be different and the individual creditors providing data may also be different, meaning one creditor may only report to one or only two of the three bureaus.
- Exceptional Credit: 800 to 850.
- Very Good Credit: 740 to 799.
- Good Credit: 670 to 739.
- Fair Credit: 580 to 669.
- Poor Credit: Under 580.
FICO scores are generally known to be the most widely used by lenders. But the credit-scoring model used may vary by lender. While FICO Score 8 is the most common, mortgage lenders might use FICO Score 2, 4 or 5. Auto lenders often use one of the FICO Auto Scores.
Generally speaking, you'll likely need a score of at least 620 — what's classified as a “fair” rating — to qualify with most lenders. With a Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loan, though, you might be able to get approved with a score as low as 500.
The credit score used in mortgage applications
While the FICO® 8 model is the most widely used scoring model for general lending decisions, banks use the following FICO scores when you apply for a mortgage: FICO® Score 2 (Experian) FICO® Score 5 (Equifax) FICO® Score 4 (TransUnion)
Like FICO scores, VantageScores range from 300 to 850 while assigning different weights to payment history, credit usage, and other activity.
The main reason your TransUnion and Equifax scores may differ is their algorithms. Each credit bureau uses its own algorithm to compute your score. Credit bureaus can also only work based on the information they receive.
Accuracy and Comparisons: While no credit score tool can claim 100% accuracy, CreditWise, like other bank-provided scores, tends to be within a few points of the scores from different banks.
Why is my FICO higher than CreditWise?
Both FICO and CreditWise use one of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies: Equifax, Experian, TransUnion. FICO uses Equifax, whereas CreditWise uses TransUnion. Checking your score on different platforms can result in differing scores.
CreditWise gives you an accurate representation of your credit health, as it sources your credit information directly from your TransUnion credit report and updates your VantageScore® 3.0 credit score as often as daily.
In general, a landlord will look for a credit score that is at least “good,” which is generally in the range of 670 to 739.
As someone with a 650 credit score, you are firmly in the “fair” territory of credit. You can usually qualify for financial products like a mortgage or car loan, but you will likely pay higher interest rates than someone with a better credit score. The "good" credit range starts at 690.
Most individuals or companies renting an apartment want credit scores from applicants to be 620 or higher. People withcredit scores lower than 620 may indicate a high risk of default on rent owed.
