What exactly does a hedge fund do?
Hedge funds are financial partnerships that employ various strategies in an effort to maximize returns for their investors. Unlike mutual funds managers, hedge fund managers have free reign to invest in non-traditional assets and employ risky strategies.
How do hedge funds make money? Hedge funds take a management fee of between one and two per cent of the amount you invest. In addition, the hedge fund manager will receive a performance fee (usually around 20 per cent on any profit).
Hedge funds may have an aura of exoticism and modernism, but their goals are as old as the art of investing itself. They seek a positive annual return (the higher the better), limited swings in value, and, above all else, capital preservation.
Hedge funds use pooled funds to focus on high-risk, high-return investments, often with a focus on shorting — so you can earn profit even when stocks fall.
Work days do tend to follow somewhat of a routine, with market open and close being the most critical. In addition to trading, hedge fund managers must also make sure all of their positions are in order, their models up-to-date, and their business/social lives active to keep investors and brokers happy.
Who Is the Richest Hedge Fund Manager? Ken Griffin of Citadel is both the richest hedge fund manager and the highest paid. In 2022, he earned $41. billion, and by the beginning of 2023 his net worth was estimated at $35 billion.
Bridgewater Associates
Westport, Conn. Westport, Conn. In 1975, Bridgewater Associates was founded by Ray Dalio in his Manhattan apartment. Today Bridgewater is the largest hedge fund in the world and Dalio has a personal fortune of approximately $19 billion.
Hedge funds are actively managed alternative investments that commonly use risky investment strategies. Hedge fund investment requires a high minimum investment or net worth from accredited investors. Hedge funds charge higher fees than conventional investment funds.
“Hedge funds are riskier investments because they are often placing bets on investments seeking outsized, shorter-term gains,” she says. “This can even be with borrowed dollars. But those bets can lose.” Hedge funds take on these riskier strategies to produce returns regardless of market conditions.
You generally must be an accredited investor, which means having a minimum level of income or assets, to invest in hedge funds. Typical investors include institutional investors, such as pension funds and insurance companies, and wealthy individuals.
How much money do you need to be considered a hedge fund?
a minimum investment of $1 million to $10 million. Despite such high thresholds, through Morgan Stanley, clients can often gain access to funds at much lower minimum investments. As discussed later, investments in single manager hedge funds may be as low as $100,000 per fund.
Hedge funds tend to have specific characteristics and features. They require wealth to participate. Hedge funds typically require an investor to have a liquid net worth of at least $1 million, or annual income of more than $200,000. They often borrow money to use in an investment.
Because they are not as regulated as mutual funds or traditional financial advisors, hedge funds are only accessible to sophisticated investors. These so-called accredited investors are high net worth individuals or organizations and are presumed to understand the unique risks associated with hedge funds.
There are two basic reasons for investing in a hedge fund: to seek higher net returns (net of management and performance fees) and/or to seek diversification.
BlackRock manages US$38bn across a broad range of hedge fund strategies. With over 20 years of proven experience, the depth and breadth of our platform has evolved into a comprehensive toolkit of 30+ strategies.
Hedge funds are generally more aggressive, riskier, and more exclusive than mutual funds. Their managers have freer rein to invest in a wide variety of assets and to use bolder strategies in pursuit of higher profits, and are rewarded with much higher fees than mutual funds charge.
Hedge fund managers often have a master's degree or even a Ph. D. in finance, mathematics, economics, financial engineering, quantitative finance, programming, marketing, or business administration. Others have advanced degrees in a specialty such as engineering or accounting.

In some cases, the hedge fund will keep securities in a prime brokerage account with a major dealer in order to borrow money against them. Money will also be deposited with Futures Commission Merchants or OTC margin accounts to collateralize trades.
While hedge fund managers, who tend to be exceptionally well-remunerated, like to live in locations where they can have a very affluent lifestyle, such as the U.S. East Coast, California, or London, the funds which they manage are a different story completely.
Hedge funds seem to rake in billions of dollars a year for their professional investment acumen and portfolio management across a range of strategies. Hedge funds make money as part of a fee structure paid by fund investors based on assets under management (AUM).
