Is 3 nights in Rome too much?
That's a tough question to answer. Rome is a city that requires time to fully appreciate its beauty, history and culture. While it's possible to see the main attractions in just a few days, I highly recommend spending 4 to 5 days in Rome to truly immerse yourself in all that this incredible city has to offer.
There are two simple answers to this question: Four or seven days. To add context, if you're making a multi-city Italian journey, you should allocate at least four days to Rome if you arrive early on day one and leave late on day four. Otherwise, consider five days if you can.
3 days is a lovely amount of time to spend in Rome. While not enough to see 'everything', three days in Rome are sufficient to visit Rome's most famous sites, taste Rome's best food and even relax in one of the city's beautiful piazzas.
With 2 days in Rome, you have just enough time to visit the highlights. Tour the Vatican Museums, enjoy the amazing view from St. Peter's Basilica, marvel at the Colosseum, get a history lesson at the Roman Forum, and stroll through the heart of Rome, with its colorful piazzas and ancient historical sights.
The eternal city offers incredible history, picture-perfect sites and delicious food. Try to spend at least 3 or 4 days there but, even if you only have a very short trip, Rome is still worth a visit. There is so much to see and eat in Rome you're sure to have an incredible vacation.
Like most capital cities, Rome isn't a cheap destination. If you're self-catering, budgeting around £60-£80 per person per day for food, drink and activities should cover costs.
How Many Days in Rome? Given the amount to do and see in the city, we think that 4 days in Rome is the absolute minimum you should plan for to avoid spending your entire trip running around from sight to sight without time to savor the atmosphere of the city and enjoy the dolce vita that makes Italy so special.
Average daily spend by real travellers in Rome: €107 (£87). This reflects what everyday travellers tend to spend in Rome. Think mid-range - most of the major attractions, a few cab rides, maybe a big night out, and a bit of shopping on the side.
Seven to 10 days is the most popular trip length for Italy travelers interested in visiting both Rome and Florence, especially when also including Venice. For travelers wanting to visit Rome and Florence exclusively, plan six to seven days for a well-paced trip.
In short, the Roma Pass is worth purchasing if you want to do plenty of sightseeing, are visiting Rome for 2-3 days, and are planning on using lots of public transport. At €32 (48 hours) or €52 (72 hours), the Roma Pass offers good value for money as long as you get plenty of use out of it.
How can I cover Italy in 3 days?
- (Rome) Vatican.
- Colosseum.
- Trevi fountain. Pantheon.
- Piazza Navona.
- (Tuscany/florence) Tower of pisa. Tuscan hill.
- (Venice) Grand canal.
Spanish Steps. The Spanish Steps and the surrounding neighborhood are widely regarded as the most beautiful part of Rome. Neoclassical buildings in beautiful condition line the streets here. It's home to most of the major attractions that first-time visitors to Rome want to see, so staying here is advantageous.
You may need two or three phrases if you plan to spend a few days in Rome. However, if you are planning a more extended stay and would like to immerse yourself in Italian culture, learning to speak the language will make your experience all the more enriching.
Travelling from Rome to Venice by train
The fastest trains from Rome to Venice take around 3 hours and 24 minutes, covering a distance of approximately 394 kilometres.
Ideally, you should plan to spend at least two days in Rome in order to see all of its main sites properly. Unfortunately, sometimes circ*mstances allow a tourist a limited amount of time to enjoy the city.
It's a difficult choice between the two, but if it's ancient history and in particular Roman history you're interested in, then you can't beat Rome. On the other hand, if you're looking to learn more about medieval and Renaissance Italian history, then you should book your next flight to Florence.
Pantheon / Piazza Navona / Campo de Fiori Area
Our absolute favorite area to stay in Rome is right in the heart of the historic center. Surrounded by the city's history and iconic monuments, you immediately feel at one with the city.
As you only need a day to see Vatican City, make sure you grab some food and check out the Vatican Gardens. You also can book a tour and have a tour guide take you around Vatican City and the highlights.
The average price of lunch or dinner at a trattoria is €25 per person. Another great budget-friendly option is dining at one of these pizzerias in Rome, where the average cost of pizza is €8 to €13. If instead you want to dine at a fancier restaurant, budget in around 40 to 50 euros per person for a meal in Rome.
Do You need a ticket for the Colosseum? You need to have a ticket or at least a reservation to visit the Colosseum. There is an exception to this rule on the free days. There are different Colosseum ticket types available, depending on what you would like to see, and regarding that, different prices apply.
Do you tip in Rome?
So, do you tip in Rome? To sum it up in one sentence: it is not expected to leave a tip in Rome but it is much appreciated. Servers and hospitality staff are paid adequately, without the need for tips. Tips do not make up the staff's wages like in the US, they are bonuses on top of this.
For some, Rome can offer enough experiences for an entire month or two, while others might find that a week or two is plenty to take it all in. It's up to each individual how much time they want to spend exploring Rome – if it feels too overwhelming and exhausting though, then it's probably time to take a break!
Forget the old cliché of Rome not being built in a day. If you've only got a day to spare, you can absolutely see the best of Rome. Unlike other European capitals, Rome has a touristic area that's fairly compact and most of it can be covered on a stroll.
Average Daily Cost For Visiting Rome
Order a glass of wine and watch the world go by. It costs around €65-€95/day to visit Rome comfortably as a budget traveler. If you want to upgrade your accommodations, add another €80-€110/night depending on your desired level of accommodation.
€100 per day would be more than enough spending money to cover transport, entry into museums / sightseeing, meals and incidental expenses. If it needs to pay for accommodation as well, you're going to have to up your budget.
