How do you read a credit report step by step?
Carefully scrutinize your credit history to check that the account number, account name, balance amount, payment history, payment due date and payment status are all correct. Check to make sure that the account's current credit limits or original loan amounts are correct.

- 300-579: Poor.
- 580-669: Fair.
- 670-739: Good.
- 740-799: Very good.
- 800-850: Excellent.
Once you obtain a credit report, look under the "collections" or "account information" section to see which of your debts are in the hands of debt collectors. Each debt that's gone to collections might be listed as a separate account.
Your credit report lists what types of credit you use, the length of time your accounts have been open, and whether you've paid your bills on time.
Of these factors, payment history and credit utilization are the most important information. Together, they make up more than 60% of the impact on your credit scores.
- Errors made to your identity information (wrong name, phone number, address)
- Accounts belonging to another person with the same or a similar name as yours (mixing two consumers' information in a single file is called a mixed file)
- Incorrect accounts resulting from identity theft.
Age Bracket | 2022 |
---|---|
18–25 | 679 (Good) |
26–41 | 687 (Good) |
42–57 | 706 (Good) |
58–76 | 742 (Very Good) |
Generally speaking, you'll likely need a score of at least 620 — what's classified as a “fair” rating — to qualify with most lenders. With a Federal Housing Administration (FHA) loan, though, you might be able to get approved with a score as low as 500.
Highlights: Most negative information generally stays on credit reports for 7 years. Bankruptcy stays on your Equifax credit report for 7 to 10 years, depending on the bankruptcy type. Closed accounts paid as agreed stay on your Equifax credit report for up to 10 years.
Which indicator drives a FICO score the most?
1. Payment History: 35% Your payment history carries the most weight in factors that affect your credit score, because it reveals whether you have a history of repaying funds that are loaned to you.
Your credit reports include information about the types of credit accounts you've had, your payment history and certain other information such as your credit limits. Credit reports from the three nationwide consumer reporting agencies — Equifax, TransUnion and Experian — may contain different account information.
Although ranges vary depending on the credit scoring model, generally credit scores from 580 to 669 are considered fair; 670 to 739 are considered good; 740 to 799 are considered very good; and 800 and up are considered excellent.
There isn't a set credit score that each person starts out with. Instead, if you don't have any credit history, you likely don't have a score at all.
What Does a “U” Stand for on a Credit Report? The “U” on your credit report stands for “unclassified,” meaning that the account hadn't been updated at the time the report was pulled. It's one of many status codes that can appear next to an account on your credit report.
When you review your credit reports, look for changes to your personal information. This includes account details, inquiries and public record data. If something looks suspicious, double check that it's not a mistake on your end, then dispute the error.
While your credit report features plenty of financial information, it only includes financial information that's related to debt. Loan and credit card accounts will show up, but savings or checking account balances, investments or records of purchase transactions will not.
All three bureaus have an online dispute process, which is often the fastest way to fix a problem, or you can write a letter. You can also call, but you may not be able to complete your dispute over the phone.
For the majority of lending decisions most lenders use your FICO score. Calculated by the data analytics company Fair Isaac Corporation, it's based on data from credit reports about your payment history, credit mix, length of credit history and other criteria.
The two major scoring companies in the U.S., FICO and VantageScore, differ a bit in their approaches, but they agree on the two factors that are most important. Payment history and credit utilization, the portion of your credit limits that you actually use, make up more than half of your credit scores.
What is America's average credit score?
What is the average credit score? The average FICO credit score in the US is 717, according to the latest FICO data. The average VantageScore is 701 as of January 2024. Credit scores, which are like a grade for your borrowing history, fall in the range of 300 to 850.
A target credit score of 661 or above should get you a new-car loan with an annual percentage rate of around 7.01% or better, or a used-car loan around 9.73% or lower. Superprime: 781-850.
The credit score required and other eligibility factors for buying a car vary by lender and loan terms. Still, you typically need a good credit score of 661 or higher to qualify for an auto loan. About 69% of retail vehicle financing is for borrowers with credit scores of 661 or higher, according to Experian.
The required credit score for a $350K loan will vary by loan type and lender. No matter what, though, you can expect a better interest rate the better your credit score. Most lenders require a minimum credit score of 620 to grant approval for a conventional loan.
To qualify for a conventional loan, you'll need a credit score of at least 620, though some lenders may choose to approve conventional mortgage applications only for borrowers with credit scores of 680 and up.
