1 What is cultural competency?
Cultural competency is the ability to understand, respect, and communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. It is a key skill for any business that wants to foster diversity, inclusion, and innovation in its workforce. Cultural competency can help you avoid misunderstandings, conflicts, and biases that can harm your relationships, reputation, and results.

There are many sides to this, I'll stick to a perspective that applies to any company. Dress code is an important aspect of company culture: it influences employee behavior, performance, and productivity. The level of formality of a dress code sets the environment the company wishes to create. A mindful dress code policy can significantly elevate company image, morale, and even productivity. Note that certain dress codes can also have negative effects on employees’ morale and productivity if they clash with their features or values. In conclusion, dress code is a powerful tool for shaping a company’s culture. Still, it is important to balance between a professional image and employees self expression (best colours, religion, culture).

Cultural competency, in my field as a fashion stylist, refers to understanding and respecting the diverse cultural backgrounds, traditions, and preferences of my clients. It means being sensitive to their unique styles, needs, and values to provide fashion guidance that resonates with their individual cultural identities.

2 How does dress code relate to culture?
Dress code is not just a matter of style or preference. It is also a way of expressing one's identity, values, and beliefs. For example, some people may wear certain colors, symbols, or accessories to show their religious, ethnic, or political affiliation. Others may dress in a way that reflects their gender identity, sexual orientation, or personal style. Dress code can also signal one's status, role, or function in a group or organization.

3 How can dress code policies impact your company culture positively?
Dress code policies can have a positive impact on your company culture if they are aligned with your mission, vision, and values. For example, if your company values creativity, innovation, and individuality, you may want to have a flexible or casual dress code that allows your employees to express themselves and feel comfortable. If your company values teamwork, collaboration, and solidarity, you may want to have a uniform or standardized dress code that creates a sense of belonging and identity. Dress code policies can also support your company culture if they are inclusive, respectful, and fair to all your employees, regardless of their cultural background, personal preferences, or special needs.

It's about communication. The way we work has changed post-pandemic, and yet very little thought has gone into updating workwear policies to align with this. If your employees are confused about what to wear to work, it impacts their effectiveness. There are studies which show the psychological link between what we wear and job performance. And yet managers aren't being given any support in communicating about this with their employees. As one said to me recently, 'people are coming in looking like they're either in their pyjamas or dressed for Royal Ascot.' But when I asked why they didn't think they could have a conversation about it with their employees, they said they hadn't been given any guidance and were confused themselves.

The number one goal for your dress code policy should be enhancing your employer brand and empowering your team. Write your dress code policy using tone and clarity to communicate your organizational values. There are generally four dress codes you may build your policy from professional, business casual, smart casual, or uniforms. Even distributed organizations should have a dress code policy; these organizations may also consider workspace standards and stipends as well.

4 How can dress code policies impact your company culture negatively?
Dress code policies can have a negative impact on your company culture if they are inconsistent, unclear, or discriminatory. For example, if your dress code policies vary depending on the department, location, or level of the organization, you may create confusion, resentment, or mistrust among your employees. If your dress code policies are vague or subjective, you may leave room for interpretation, bias, or favoritism that can undermine your credibility and authority. If your dress code policies are exclusive, insensitive, or oppressive to some of your employees, you may violate their rights, dignity, or freedom, and damage your morale, engagement, and retention.

Keep your dress code policy under three paragraphs, but include rationale and visual examples for clarity. Having a standard operation procedure (SOP) document for enforcing your dress code is crucial for success. Treat your dress code policy like a living document to be reviewed and revised at a constructive cadence.

Your dress code is an extension of your company values and mission. Cultivate your dress code policy collaboratively to establish lasting buy-in and cooperation from your organization. Call on representatives from various teams and levels to collect ideas for the dress code policy using whiteboard exercises. After the representative team develops a shortlist, pass the dress code over to human resources to formalize and enforce the policy. Collaborative policymaking allows for constructive feedback and increases acceptance.
