Eidul Adha 2024 in Pakistan likely to fall on THIS date

KARACHI: The astronomer has predicted a possible date of Eid-ul-Adha in Pakistan, announcing the Zill-Hajj moon’s time to be sighted, ARY News reported.According to the details, astronomer Javed Iqbal said that the moon of Zill-Hajj would born on June 6. He said that the moon is most likely to be visible on Friday, June 7.Javed Iqbal said that at the time of sunset on June 7, Friday the moon will be 26 hours and 45 minutes old. He said that the moon must be at least 19 hours old to be visible.“The moon is likely to be visible for about 15 minutes after the sunset on Friday,” the astronomer added.Javed Iqbal said that the first day of Eid-ul-Adha in Pakistan likely to observed on June 17, Monday.Meanwhile, the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee will meet in Karachi on Friday for a sighting of the Zilhajj moon.The meeting will be held at the Meteorological Department office in Karachi.Chairman Ruet-e-Hilal Committee Chairman Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad will preside over the meeting.Eidul Adha, also known as the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of two Eid festivals celebrated by the Muslim faithful to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son to God.Traditionally marked by the slaughter of animals, whose meat is shared with family members and the poor.The faithful slaughter their sacrificial animals in remembrance of the tradition of Prophet Ibrahimi, which continues for three days of Eid.

SC reserves verdict in NAB amendments case

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) of Pakistan on Thursday reserved its verdict on the federal government’s plea requesting it to review the decision against amendments to National Accountability Bureau (NAB) laws, ARY News reported.A five-member SC larger bench, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa, and comprising Justice Aminuddin Khan, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Justice Athar Minallah, and Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi reserved the verdict after hearing arguments from all sides.During the hearing on Thursday, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, who challenged the amendments, attended the hearing via video link from the Adial jail in Rawalpindi and completed his arguments.The SC heard the final arguments from all sides and reserved the verdict to a date to be later pronounced by the court’s office.It is pertinent to mention here that the apex court struck down amendments made to NAB laws on the PTI founder’s plea.In a majority 2-1 verdict, the top court had approved Imran Khan’s petition challenging amendments made to the country’s accountability laws during the tenure of the previous Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)-led government.The top court also restored graft cases against public office holders that were closed down following the amendments to NAB laws.Subsequently, the federal government filed the review plea in the case under the SC Practice and Procedure Law and made the Federation of Pakistan, National Accountability Bureau, and PTI founder respondents.Citing no violation of basic rights with the NAB amendments, the federal government pleaded with the SC to review its decision. “Legislation is the right of the Parliament,” the plea said.Read More:SC rejects plea seeking live streaming of NAB law caseEarlier, the SC rejected the plea seeking a live broadcast of the case.In a detailed order on the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government’s plea, the SC maintained “In live-streaming cases, there is always a possibility that the facility may be misused or exploited for ulterior or personal purposes. Pakistan set to export SUVs, other vehicles

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Industries and Production announced that Pakistan will export sport utility vehicles (SUVs) and other cars in the next few months, ARY News reported.According to officials of the Ministry of Industries and Production, Pakistan will export 50 locally manufactured SUVs of Toyota Indus Motors in the first phase.Separately, Toyota Indus' Hybrid Corolla Cross will be exported in the second phase.The Ministry of Industries and Production maintained that the company has also sent 100 mechanical engineers from Pakistan to Japan for training.“Pakistani workforce in Japan has been recognised for their exceptional skills and expertise,” The Ministry of Industries and Production added.Earlier on June 4, the federal government is considering a proposal to increase the regulatory duty on used imported vehicles.According to the details, the federal budget for the next financial year will be presented on June 12 in which regulatory duty on imported used vehicles is likely to be increased.According to sources, the regulatory duty on vehicles larger than 1800 cc is expected to be rise by 30 percent while the duty on large vehicles is likely to increase from 70 to 100 percent.A 15 percent duty may be imposed on used vehicles up to 1800cc while new and old hybrid vehicles up to 1800cc may continue to enjoy zero duty.It is feared that imported used vehicles will become more expensive in the country.

Strong winds leave two dead in Wazirabad

SHC allows journalists to cover court proceedings

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) Thursday allowed journalists to report on court proceedings, asking them to ensure “guidelines and law”.The SHC announced the verdict on a petition of the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) challenging the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra)’s restriction on airing of court proceedings on news channels.In its order, the high court said the apex court’s guidelines should be adopted while reporting.According to a notification issued by the ele­ctronic media regulator, all news channels have been barred from airing material about ‘ongoing court cases’ until a final verdict is announced.READ:LHC moved against Pemra’s ban on court coverageThe media regulatory authority imposed ban on news regarding subjudice cases and directed the channels to only air information that is in the public interest.PEMRA also directed the media outlets to avoid expressing their ‘opinions on subjudice cases’. Govt forms SIFC cabinet committee to boost investment

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has constituted Cabinet Committee on Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) to ensure implementation of recommendations within the contours of SIFC.A notification has been issued to this effect.As per the notification, the committee will submit decisions to the federal cabinet for approval.Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will be chairman of the committee while the army chief, chief ministers and national coordinator will attend the committee meetings on special invitation.The prime minister has also formed another cabinet committee on immigration, overseas employment and technical vocational education and training.The committee will act as a central forum for all government agencies related to overseas employment and technical training and will review policies in this regard.It will also approve curriculum, monitoring and evaluation framework for vocational training institutions and will devise plans to combat illegal immigration, human trafficking and exploitation of skilled workers.The committee will also develop an action plan to engage with international partners.Earlier, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar announced that seven desks have been established under Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) to attract foreign investment.Addressing a press conference, the information minister said that the seven desks, established for China, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, European Union, United States and the Far East, would focus on bringing foreign investment to Pakistan.

The project was presented in Geneva conference, and they helped us," Murad Ali Shah said.Chief Minister said that the affected people also being given ownership rights. The process with regard to ownership that was earlier suspended, has been resumed again, he said.Murad Ali Shah said that 2.1 million housing units' project has been launched and it is the world's biggest construction project for flood affectees.He said the federal government didn't yet constitute the ECNEC, which is delaying release of development funds as approval of projects from the ECNEC has been compulsory.CM Shah said that the housing project has also won award."There are eight lac women beneficiaries in 2.1 mln housing units project," he said. Around eight lac houses of the project have been under construction".Murad Ali Shah said that the federal and provincial governments had allocated Rs25 billion each, but the funds were not released from the federal government. "Hopefully Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will fulfill his promise with the people of Sindh," chief minister added.

Woman burned to death by in-laws in Muzaffargarh

Human trafficking case: Sarim Burney sent on two-day physical remand

KARACHI: A local court on Thursday granted a two-day physical remand of social worker Sarim Burney to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on human smuggling charges, ARY News reported.Investigation Officer Chaudhry Bilal produced Burney before Judicial Magistrate Khaleequ Zaman. And requested the court to order the social worker's 14-day physical remand in police custody.During the hearing, Burney's counsel argued that fake case was registered against his client and requested the court to discharge Sarim Burney from the case.After hearing the arguments, the court rejected the request to discharge Burney from the case and granted his two days remand to FIA.The court also asked the investigating officer to produce a progress report on the next hearing.FIRThe Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) registered first information report (FIR) against rights activist Sarim Burney for allegedly trafficking newborn babies to United States (US).In the FIR, the investigation agency booked the rights activist for ‘trafficking’ a newborn baby – identified as Haya – to the US. Haya, who according to FIA was the last girl trafficked to US, was allegedly bought from her parents for Rs1 million.Sarim Burney, who was arrested earlier in the dayat Karachi’s Jinnah International Airport, trafficked 20 newborns to the US in the past year on pretext of adoption. The FIA claimed that 15 of the trafficked children were girls.Burney will be presented in court for remand in the first case, with sources claiming that US investigative agencies are also probing the matter.The FIA, in a statement, said that the records of the allegedly trafficked children were provided by the Pakistan embassy. Citing the Trust documents, the agency said Burney’s wife was also among the beneficiaries.Sources told ARY News that the wife can also be nominated in the case after the Sindh government verifies the documents. The agency further claimed that several individuals assisted Burney in purchasing and smuggling of children.According to the FIA, Haya’s parents are extremely poor, and their statements have been recorded. Further cases related to human trafficking and money laundering will be registered against Burney, the agency said.

Nepra okays another Rs3.33 per unit hike in power tariff

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) has approved an increase of Rs3.3 per unit in the power tariff for the consumers of power distribution companies (DISCOs) except K-electric.According to NEPRA, the tariff hike on account of fuel charges adjustment (FCA) shall be applicable to all the consumer categories except Electric Vehicle Charging Stations (EVCS) and lifeline consumers.As a result of the latest hike in electricity prices, consumers will face higher electricity bills in June.On Tuesday, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) hiked the per unit price of electricity by Rs3.76 per unit on account of quarterly fuel adjustment.According to a notification issued by the power regulator, the increase will be applicable for three months this year — June, July and August.READ:Budget 2024-25: Pakistan likely to unveil relief package for power consumersAs a result of the latest hike in electricity prices, consumers will face higher electricity bills, with additional rates of Rs 1.90 per unit in June, Rs 0.93 per unit in July and August.Furthermore, this tariff hike will add an additional burden of Rs 46.61 billion on electricity consumers and will also be applicable to K-electric consumers.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has issued special instructions to take allies into confidence over the fiscal year budget 2024-25, ARY News reported citing sources.According to sources, Minister of State for Finance, Ali Pervez Malik, will visit Quetta today to brief the Balochistan government on the budget measures.Sources said that the consultations have been completed with the PM Azad Kashmir and CM Gilgit-Baltistan, as well as with parliamentary parties including PPP, MQM, and others.All four chief ministers have been invited to the National Economic Council meeting, where they will be briefed on the budget targets and measures, sources added.Sources further said that CM KP Ali Amin Gandapur, will also be invited to the meeting and the government will seek approval from parliamentary parties for the budget.Read more:Federal budget 2024-25 likely to be presented on June 12The budget 2024-25 which was earlier scheduled to be presented on June 10 is now likely to be presented on June 12.The Pakistan Economic Survey 2023-24 will be presented on June 11 after a meeting of the council on June 10, the sources said.The federal budget 2024-25 will likely get approval from the Senate by June 26. The Pakistani government is likely to end tax exemptions in the FY2024-25 budget on IMF’s demand.According to budget proposals for the budget 2024-25, Pakistan is likely to end exemption on sales and incometax, phase-wise.The government is also considering imposing a sales tax on tractors and pesticides, potentially leading to price hikes for these essential agricultural products.

Islamabad gets 30 electric buses

ISLAMABAD: Another fleet of 8 electric buses arrived in Islamabad on Wednesday, bringing the total to 30 out of 160 buses.22 buses arrived in Islamabad today, with a charging point established at Jinnah Convention Center. Initially, these 30 buses will operate on two routes.The first route will commence from NUST Orange Line Depot in G-11, extending to PIMS Hospital. It will pass through G-11 Markaz, G-10 Markaz, G-9 Markaz, and G-8 Markaz before concluding at PIMS. This route includes 13 stops, with buses arriving at each stop every ten minutes.The second route will start from PIMS and will be concluded at Bari Imam. This route will pass through from G-7, G-6, Melody, Abpara, Ataturk Road, Serena Hotel, Foreign Office, Radio Pakistan, Diplomatic Enclave to Bari Imam.The bus service will remain operational from 6AM to 10PM.On the instructions of Chairman CDA, a procedure will also be devised to give subsidy to the deserving people, including disabled persons, students and others.These buses will provide modern and high-standard travel facilities to Islamabad residents.
