J.M.RHODES & SONS..Retail Grocery Trade.Mr.J.M.RHODES,senior member of J.M.RHODES and Son,is
perhaps the oldest business in Halls.Born in Cherokee county,Ala.,when five years,moved with his family
to Dyer county,this state,and settled near Fowkles.In 1898,Mr.RHODES established himself in the general
mercantile business,also later the drug business,then City Hardware & Furniture,the present grocery business
was established seven years ago.Mr.W.A.RHODES,son and junior member of this firm.

R.H.CHISHOLM,LAUDERDALE COUNTY TRUSTEE..Mr.CHISHOLM was born on a farm one mile north of
Halls December 4th,1896; his father,Mr.A.M.CHISHOLM,being a well known timberman.The junior Mr.
CHISHOLM finished his education in Halls high school at the head of his class and later taught in the
county public schools at Coal Creek,Pleasant Hill,and Central School Houses.

her parents,Mr.& Mrs.James M.COX this week. James M.COX attended the Retail Jewelers’ Convention in
Memphis last week. Little Harroll FARLEY spent Saturday and Sunday with his grandparents,Mr.& Mrs.S.F.FARLEY
of Gates. Mrs.Pearl HART who has been in Memphis for several months,is the guest of her mother,Mrs.Mary
FARMER. Mrs.W.A.MOORE is visiting her son,Neill at Collierville this week. Miss Wilma HURLEY of Shelby,Miss.,
is the guest of her mother,Mrs.J.B.HURLEY this week.Mrs.Betra MITCHELL spent Tuesday and Wednesday in
Memphis the guest of her father,Mr.J.HURT. Mrs.W.H.HANNA,who has been attending the bedside of her daughter,
Miss Anna Mary,who is in a hospital in Memphis,spent Sunday at home. James MASSENGILL,the seven-year-old
son of Dr.A.P.MASSENGILL,happened to a serious accident Wednesday afternoon while out playing,falling and
breaking his collarbone.

NEWS FROM OUR SOLDIER BOYS..T-5 JAMES W.CHIPMAN of Halls,Rt.1,has recently received his discharge from
the army at Fort Knox,Ky. T-5 HAROLD LOVELACE is now at home after receiving his discharge from the Army last week.
Through error we listed PFC EDDIE M.STEELMAN as having received his discharge from the Army last week.This was a
little premature but Eddie is now at home after serving with a Military Police outfit in Europe. SGT.DORRIS JORDAN,of
Crockett county has been discharged at Fort Knox,Ky.,after almost five years service. TEC SGT.JAMES PEERY arrived
home during the weekend after being discharged from the Army after serving in Europe.Just prior to returning home he
was a coach of a service football team at LeHarve,France. PVT.NEIL DYER,JR.,son of Mrs.Neil DYER,of Halls,sailed on
December 8th from Norfolk,Va.,enroute to China.PVT.DYER will go through the Panama Canal and to Tientsin,China,where
he will join a Marine Corps unit.He received his training at Pharris Island.

WITH THE IST CAVALRY DIVISION IN TOKYO..PFC IOTHA L.CHIPMAN,Halls,Tenn.,of the Eighth Army 1st Cavalry Division
now in Tokyo is among the latest group of men selected to return to the United States for demobilization.Overseas 8
months,CHIPMAN served in “F” Troop,12th Cavalry Regiment as a Rifleman.A veteran of two campaigns,he wears the
Asiatic-Pacific Theatre ribbon with campaign stars for Levte and Luzon,the Combat Infantryman’s Badge and the Phillippine
Liberation ribbon with two stars.A farmer in civilian life,CHIPMAN entered the Army in 1944.His wife Mildred,lives at
137 East Tigrett Street,Halls,Tenn.,and his father,Mr.Paul Chipman,resides in Henning,Tennessee.

MRS.J.T.GEAN IS BURIED MONDAY..Mrs.J.T.GEAN died at her home in the Poplar Grove Community Sunday at the
age of 83.Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Poplar Grove,
with the Rev.A.D.SALISBURY officiating,assisted by Rev.N.D.SALISBURY.Burial in Poplar Grove Cemetery.She is
survived by two sons,Garland G.GEAN,of Halls and Rev.George W.GEAN of the Poplar Grove Community; three daughters,Mrs.M.T.SORRELL,Mrs.N.L.ARCHER and Mrs.Andrew SCOTT; 18 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren.

CHILDRESS CHARGED WITH SHOOTING..Elvie CHILDRESS,local taxi stand operator has been released under a
$2500.00 bond following the shooting of I.L.OSBORNE,service station owner and taxi operator,according to Sheriff
Oscar GRIGGS’office.CHILDRESS was arrested at the home of his brother in Fowkles Monday by Sheriff GRIGGS
and Deputy Nat GRAMMER,and Deputy Marvin GRAMMER.OSBORNE is in the Dyersburg hospital,his condition in not serious.

MISS DONNY HALL IS BURIED THURSDAY..Miss Utilla “Donny” HALL died Wednesday morning at her home in
the Double Bridges Community after a lenghty illness.She was 71.Never married,Miss Donny was a member of
a prominent family of this section.She was a member of Bethesda Methodist Church,funeral services from the
church Thursday morning,burial in the city cemetery.Surviving are a cousin,Dr.W.M.HALL,of Double Bridges;
three neices,Miss Byrdie EDWARDS,with whom she made her home; Mrs.W.T.McDEARMON,of Bonicord; and
Mrs.D.C.CRAWFORD,of Stanton; also five nephews,Tola THOMPSON,Kansas City; Raymond HALL,Union City;
Bob HALL,Forked Dear; E.M.HALL,Covington; and Ralph HALL,of MEMPHIS.

M-SGT.LIGHTFOOT GETS DISCHARGE..Master Sergeant R.H.LIGHTFOOT,husband of the former Earline MEADOWS
of this place and the father of Marilyn LIGHTFOOT,has recently received his discharge from an Army engineering
outfit after taking part in the European war and then traveling to the Pacific,however his outfit did not reach the
Pacific theatre of operations until after the surrender of Japan.M-Sgt.LIGHTFOOT was a member of the Engineering
outfit which was working on the Ludendoff bridge across the Rhine at the time of its collapse.On the previous day
he had been hit by a truck and had fallen from the bridge,he was released from the hospital,but was not on duty when
the bridge fell.(More on his release.)

afternoon stating that he had arrived in the States at New York that morning.

INJURED IN CAR WRECK..Mrs.William PERRY,who is making her home with Mr.& Mrs.W.A.PERRY until her husband is
discharged from the service,was painfully injured Tuesday night when the car in which she was riding was struck by
a truck.Mrs.PERRY and Mrs.Bill LIGHTFOOT,driver of the car,were crossing the intersection of Tigrett St.,and the highway
when the truck alleged ran a stop light and hit the side of the car.Mrs.LIGHTFOOT was bruised,but no broken bones while
Wendell PERRY,small son of Mr.& Mrs.W.A.PERRY was cut about the head.The driver of the truck was place under
arrest and charged with reckless driving.

the home of her daughter,Mrs.Willie BRANDON,in the Poplar Grove Community at the age of 85.Services were Sunday
from Williams Chapel Baptist Church with Rev.Parker Lee HAYS officiating,burial in Halls Cemetery.Surviving are
two other daughters,Mrs.Nora BRIGGANCE,of Peach Orchard,Mo.,and Mrs.Pearl STYERS,of Memphis; two brothers,
William HALLIBURTON & Henry HALLIBURTON,both of Dyer,Tenn.; and two sisters,Mrs.Ellan McCaslin,of Dyer,and

OLDS in Memphis.He entered the service November17,1943,has been overseas since May 1944.He is on a 30-day leave.
SGT.Garland HARGETT,son of Mr.& Mrs.John HARGETT,arrived home Tuesday night after receiving his discharge at
Fort George Mead,Maryland Saturday.He has been in the services 45 months.

MRS.LINNIE RICHARDSON BURIED SATURDAY..Mrs.Linnie RICHARDSON,widow of Will RICHARDSON,former Halls
business man,died at the home of her son,Everett RICHARDSON,in the Nankipoo Community,near here Friday morning
of last week Mrs.RICHARSON,who was 85,was born in Dyer County,and had been a resident of Lauderdale county for
65 years.She was a member of Halls Methodist Church Rev.W.F.MAXEDON,pastor,conducted funeral services at Halls
Methodist Church Saturday,burial in Halls cemetery. Her son was her only close survivor.

received a call from her husband,John Ralph ADKERSON,SC3-C Saturday.He landed at Seattle,Washington Friday
January 18th from overseas.He will receive his discharge from the Millington Naval Separation Center this week
.He has been in service 26 months,served in the European Threatre,taking part in the invasion of Southern France.
For the past three months,he has been in Alaska.

has been placed on a four-months terminal leave by the Army Medical Corps and is now in Ripley with his wife
and baby. Mr.& Mrs.E.L.RAINEY have received word from their son,Bernard RAINEY stating he had been promoted
to the rank of Quartermaster 3-C with the U.S.NAVY.The letter,written from Pearl Harbor,told of meeting his first
cousin,Waymond MOORE,of Halls while in Pearl Harbor.They were able to spend three days and nights together.
He will be leaving Pearl Harbor January 23rd. Mr.& Mrs.Frank MOORE have received word from their son,Wayne
MOORE,of the U.S.Maritime Service stating he is being discharged.

RIPLEY MAYOR IS SUED..Suits asking damages totaling $222,500 have been filed in Lauderdale County Circuit
Court against Mayor Joe TUCKER of Ripley,doing business as City Lumber Co.,and against Vernon GRIFFIN.The
suits were the result of an auto accident on Highway 51 near Ripley on March 19,1945 in which a sailor,Bobby
CALDWELL and his parents,Mr.& Mrs.H.D.CALDWELL were killed.According to reports by officials at the time,young
CALDWELL was enroute to his home on leave prior to going overseas and was met in Memphis by his parents,wife,
child and sister.Just before arriving in Ripley,the auto crashed into a truck stolen earlier from the lumber company
and abandoned on the highway.Young CALDWELL and his parents were killed outright.Mrs.Bobby CALDWELL,her
16-month-old daughter and the sister were seriously injured.

SAVAGE IS VETERANS REPRESENTATIVE..Paul SAVAGE,former Ripley postmaster and state commissioner of public
welfare before entering the service,has been sworn in as stste veterans’employment representative.Mr.SAVAGE is a
native of Lauderdale County and was prominent in Ripley and Lauderdale county political and business affairs before
accepting appointment as welfare commissioner under the former Gov.Prentice COOPER.He had 32 months of
military service being discharged with the rank of Major.

FATHER OF FRANK THOMPSON DIES..Services for Henry G.THOMPSON of Bells,merchant and civic leader
and father of R.Frank THOMPSON of Memphis,and formerly of Halls,were held Saturday afternoon in Bells,burial
in Bells Cemetery.He died of a heart attack Friday at his home in Bells.He was 67.Born in Crockett County,formerly
was operator of the H.E.THOMPSON Dry Goods firm.Retiring in 1929,he re-entered business some ten years ago.
His first wife,the former Eddie Mae NEIL,mother of Frank THOMPSON,died seven years ago.He leaves his second

LITTLE SPECKLED HEN GREATLY MOURNED..Death struck Thursday night of last week in the farm yard of Bernice
BRANDON of the Poplar Grove community claiming the queen of the barnyard as his victim,a little eleven years and
six months old mottled Anconia banty hen known as Wimpie. Wimpie had outlived all her children and grandchildren.
There are known survivors except friends from the human family.She had not been on the production line for the past
six years,but her heart has ever been with the cause.On beautiful spring days she was wont to go about the hen house
seeking a suitable nest,singing all the while in her lovely contralto voice.Her many friends mourn her passing.

DIED TUESDAY..Rosco B.ALLEY,prominent farmer of the Halespoint community,and native of Crockett County,died
at his home after a lenghty illness.He was 59 years of age.A member of the Lauderdale County Quarterly Court,he
had served as magistrate of the 9th civil dist until ill health forced him to retire some eight months ago.He was a member
of Zion Hill Baptist Church,Dyer County.Funeral services were held there on Thursday.In addition to his wife,Mrs.Irene

died Thursday of last week in the Baptist Hospital,Memphis.Mr.THURMOND had been seriously ill prior to his death.
His wife and daughter,Miss Frances Ann THURMOND,were at his bedside.Rites were held Friday from Curry Funeral
Home,burial in Fairview Cemetery.Mr.THURMOND was a native of Lauderdale County.He was a WWI vet and a
member of the dyersburg Post of the American Legion.In the early twenties he operated a bakery in Dyersburg.Later
he engaged with his father,A.P.THURMOND and brother,Clarence THURMOND.In addition to his wife and daughter,
he leaves a son,William THURMOND,who is a vet of WWII; his father,A.P.THURMOND; three sisters,Carrie THURMOND,

MRS.CORA MOORE BURIED MONDAY..The death of Mrs.Cora MOORE occurred at her home after three weeks
illness,Saturday evening brought great grief to the hearts of many who knew her.She was born in Lauderdale
County,Tenn.,January 13th,1867,and from her home in Halls,Tenn.,June 1st,1946,she departed this life for her
eternal home in the City of God.Mrs.MOORE was converted in early life and joined the Methodist Church where
she has been a member for more than 65 years.(Lots of praise & a prayer).She is the widow of the late William
Munn MOORE,prominent land owner,who preceded her in death January 21st,1929.Remaining to mourn her death

IS CANDIDATE FOR TRUSTEE..Lauren CHISM,a WWII vet,is announcing his candidacy for the office of Trustee
of Lauderdale County.He was born October 29,1917 at Lightfoot,son of Mr.& Mrs.Willie CHISM; a graduate of
Ripley High School; four years assistant manager of Bostonian Men’s Shop,Memphis.On February 17,1941,he
joined the U.S.Army,commissioned a Lieutenant and sailed for England as a member of a Tank Destroyer
Battalion.He took part in the invasion landing in Normany on D-4 Day and participated in all five European
campaigns.While in France he met his brother,Wilbur CHISM,and after a few hours together,they separated
each going with his battalion.Wilbur CHISM was killed in action on August 17,1944,and Lauren CHISM was
wounded on August 23,1944.He was discharged on November 13,1945.He holds the following: Bronze Star,
Purple Heart,Presidental Unit Citation,Pre-Pearl Harbor ribbon,European Theatre Ribbon with five campaign
stars.In 1942,he married Miss Hortense GRAMMER.They have one child,Patty Lea CHISM,2 years old.At Present
he is a traveling representative in West Tennessee for Mechanics Tool and Forge Co. of Sabina,Ohio.

RIPLEY PHYSICIAN DIES..Dr.Joe B.LACKEY died of a heart attack early Monday at Baptist Hospital,Memphis,
where he became a patient June 23rd.He was 62.A son of the late Dr.William K. and Eddie L.WARDLAW
LACKEY,he was born in Ripley and spent his entire life here.He attended Medical School at Vanderbilt,
spent two years as an intern in Bellevue Hospital,New York City.Returning to Ripley,he began the practice
of medicine with his father.After the death of his father in 1922,he opened his own office.He leaves a
brother,William K.LACKEY,a money order clerk at the Ripley Post Office; a sister,Mrs.Lucillus KIRKPATRICK.
Services in the First Methodist Church,burial in Maplewood cemetery.

which exists over our county of the Sheriff’s election to be held August 1st of this year,I have decided
to enter the race as a candidate for Sheriff of Lauderdale Couty,Tenn.Accordingly I have tendered to

veteran of WWI,died Monday night at the Veteran Hospital,Memphis,where he had been a patient
since May 30th.He was 56.Services were held Wednesday afternoon from Lebanon Methodist Church
with Rev.C.C.LEWIS officiating,burial in Lebanon Cemetery.Born and reared in Crockett County on Halls
Route #4,Mr.VAUGHN operated a store and large farming interests in the Vaughn Store Community.During
WWI he served as a private in Company M,46th Infantry.He leaves his wife,Mrs.Lera VAUGHN; his parents,
Mr.& Mrs.Joe S.VAUGHN,Halls; a sister,Miss Ada VAUGHN,Halls; and three brothers,Lyle VAUGHN,Crockett
Co.,Bernard VAUGHN,Shreveport,La.,and Asa VAUGHN,local city mail carrier.

DIED IN MISSOURI..Roy HILLIARD,Sr.,received word Thursday of the death of his nephew,Glynn DUNCAN,
at a government hospital at Excelsoir Springs,Mo.His body was expected to arrive by train Thursday night
and funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.It is expected that the funeral will be held at Enon
Church either Saturday or Sunday.Mr.DUNCAN had been ill some time,having been wounded overseas.

Grove Baptist Church.She leaves her husband; a daughter,Mrs.Ellis SASSER,Halls; a sister,Mrs.Ellie
BALLINGER,Maury City.Funeral services were Thursday at Poplar Grove Baptist Church.

DIED AT EXCELSIOR SPRINGS..Glynn A.DUNCAN died at the Veterans Hospital,Excelsior Springs,Mo.,
June 25th.He was 24.Funeral services were held at Enon Baptist Church Saturday,June 29th,burial in
Halls Cemetery.Mr.DUNCAN served more than three years in the Army with eleven months combat duty
in Germany.He returned from Overseas duty July 12,1945.After a 30 day furlough at home,he was discharged
on October 4th,1945.He became ill and was sent to Obispo,Calif.,and later returned to Excelsior Springs.He
was the son of Mr.& Mrs.I.A.DUNCAN,St.Louis,former residents of Halls.He leaves one brother,Lloyd A.DUNCAN;
one sister,Betty DUNCAN.

PASSES AWAY..Friends and relatives of Al Couin AMITH,age 75 years,were greived last Thursday afternoon,
July 18th,when they learned of his death at Baptist Hospital,Memphis.Mr.SMITH and Miss Minnie QUINN were
married 52 years ago and had made their home in Halls the greater part of that time.Funeral services were in
Halls Baptist church July 19th,burial in Halls Cemetery. Surviving are his wife; daughters,Mrs.J.C.DODSON,

HUSBAND DIES IN PLANE CRASH..Word has been received here of the death of Pete GUTHRIE,of Harlan,Ky.,
husband of the former Bitsey FERGUSON,in a plane crash Tuesday morning.Mrs.GUTHRIE and their son,Petie,
were visiting her parents,Mr.& Mrs.E.A.FERGUSON near Dyersburg when word of the crash came.

NOT ENOUGH WEEDS..Lester OLDS was said to have been burning last week.It seems that his grandson
from Memphis had been visiting with Mr.& Mrs.OLDS and the boy and Mr.OLDS had gone down in the
Mississippi bottom and were walking through a field of corn.The grandson asked,”Is this your field of corn?”
Mr.OLDS answered no,that it belonged to Mr.L.L.McDEARMAN,and the youngster replied,”didn’t think so,
isn’t enough grass and weeds in it.”

26th,Miss Anne GREEN,daughter of Mr.& Mrs.Allen Burney GREEN,of 648 Hillcrest,became the bride of
Juliun T.MULLINS,son of Mr.& Mrs.W.G.MULLINS,of 818 North Holmes,Memphis.Lewis F.MILLS officiated
with the vows being said at 8 o’clock.Among the five attendants of Miss GREEN were her sister,Miss Betty
GREEN,maid of honor; and her cousin,Miss Patricia AVERY,Gates,bridesmaid.It being a formal wedding,
all the feminine attendants wore lovely flocks with floor length skirts and carried colonial bouquets of roses.
Paul AVERY,uncle of the bride,was soloist for the occasion and sang “Because” and “I Love You Truly.”
Mr.MULLINS has been discharged from the Marine Corps after serving four and a half years,three years
of which were spent overseas.He is now a student at Memphis State College.

her home in Gates Saturday after a six-week illness were held Sunday at 2 o’clock in the Church of Christ
in Gates.The Rev.R.E.BLACK,Maury City,officiated.Mrs.GHOLSON was born in Maury City,co*ckett County,
Tenn.,moving to Lauderdale County 50 years ago.She was 72 and amember of the Church of Christ,burial
in Gates cemetery.She leaves her husband,R.W.GHOLSON; sister,Mrs.Lula ROUTT,Columbus,Ohio.

WELDING CONCERN CHANGES NAME..The Hallscraft Sheet Metal Works announces the change of name
to The Hallscraft Welding Service.This fully equipped Arc-Acetelyne Welding Shop is located on the Nankipoo
Road,three miles west of Halls,owned and operated by Harrell E.CLEMENT,recently discharged WWII veteran.
Mr.CLEMENT saw duty as a machine gunner with the 310th Infantry Reg.of the 78th Division active in the European
Theatre of Operations.Mr.CLEMENT holds certified Welding Cards of the American Bureau of Shipbuilding and
Hartford Insurance Co.,for x-ray welding.He and his family at present are making their home with Mr.& Mrs.Richard
E.CLEMENT,of Nankipoo.

RECALLED TO ACTIVE ARMY DUTY..James McFARLAND,former Captain in the United States Army,has been
recalled to active duty and left Tuesday of this week for assignment at Fort McCellan.He will return to service
with his former rank.His wife,the former Martha PYBAS,will join him if he is assigned to a permanent station.
She is the Home Economics teacher here and will resign if she can join Captain McFARLAND.

MRS.CAMPBELL BURNED..Mrs.Lawrence CAMPBELL was severly burned late Saturday afternoon when
it is said a can of coal oil with which she was trying to start a fire in a stove exploded and set fire to the
house.Mr.& Mrs.CAMPBELL lived on the C.W.GRAY farm east of Halls.The house was completely
destroyed by the fire.

INJURED WHEN STRUCK BY TAXI FRIDAY..Neal DAVIS,Jr.,12 year-old-son of Mr.& Mrs.Neal DAVIS,Sr.,was
painfully injured Friday afternoon of last week when he was struck by a taxi driven by Verlin CHAPMAN at
the intersection of Main and Church streets.It is understood that the child jumped off the curb into the side
of the taxie.He was rushed to a Dyersburg hospital where he was found to have broken his right wrist and
other injuried and bruises.He was able to be out the first of the week.CHAPMAN was placed under technical
arrest,but no charges were made as witnesses testified he was not at fault.

W.H.PARKS DIES AFTER STROKE..W.H.PARKS,66,resident of dyersburg,passed away at the home of his son,
Richard H.PARKS in Dyersburg Tuesday morning following a stroke.He was born in Dyersburg and moved to
Halls where he lived for awhile.Upon his return to Dyersburg he became a well-known well-driller until he was
unable to work.He served in and out of West Tennessee in this capacity for 40 years.Survivors other than his
son are two daughters,Mrs.Edmond RHODES,Huntsville,Ala.,and Miss Deloise PARKS,Dyersburg.He was a
brother-in-law of Mrs.I.A.PALMORE,Halls.Funeral services were conducted from Curry Funeral Home,Dyersburg
Wednesday,burial in Halls Cemetery.

HINES PURCHASES HARDWARE STORE..Louis R.HINES,Memphis,has purchased the Castleman Hardware
and is now operating under the firm name of Hines Hardware & Supply Co.Mr.Austin M.HINES,formerly of
Memphis,has assumed management of the business and is making his home in Halls.He is the brother of the
owner.Both are natives of the Cross Roads community in the corner of Dyer County and are known here.

Garner Funeral Home in charge.A former resident of Halls,she had made her home in Benton for 20
years where her husband is superintendent of Pope County Schools.In addition to her husband,she

TWO LOSE LIVES IN CAR WRECK..Funeral rites for C.M.WALKER were held Thursday afternoon in Dyersburg.
Clarence M.WALKER,76,retired Dyersburg educator and prominent citizen,was instantly killed about 7 o’clock
Monday night when the auto occupied by him and Mrs.WALKER was struck by another at the highway intersection
at Four Points.In addition to his wife,he leaves two sons,Charles WALKER,a civil engineer,and Thomas WALKER,
who lives on the old homeplace; a daughter,Mrs.Lucy WILLIAMS,Knoxville; and five grandchildren. MRS.ROSA
REVIERE LEWIS,57,wife of Dr.J.R.LEWIS,Ripley,and Judge of the Lauderdale County Court,an occupant of the
other car,also was killed in the collision.In addition to her husband,she leaves three sons,J.Rhea LEWIS,Jr.,Ripley,
Mont L.LEWIS,Ripley,and H.H.LEWIS,Friendship; a daughter,Mrs.Stewart NUNN,Ripley; two brothers,Richard

morning at Weakley County Hospital of a head injury suffered the previous Thursday when a large
piece of timber he was sawing at the Shannon Stave Mill in Greenfield struck him in the back of the head.

were hostesses at a dinner and theatre party Tuesday evening honoring Mrs.James McFARLAND,recent bride.
The setting for the dinner was the Cordell Hull Hotel,Dyersburg,where places for 12 were laid,the honoree’s
place being marked with a gardenia corsage.Mrs.PYBAS,mother of the bride found her place marked with a
corsage of pink roses.Mrs.McFARLAND was presented blue & crystal ash trays and holder in the Cambridge

MRS.CLYDE COBB IS VICTIM OF POLIO..Mrs.Rebecca JACKSON COBB,wife of the Rev.William Clyde COBB,
Missionary Baptist minister of Dyersburg,Tenn.,fied of infantile paralysis at Isolation Hospital,Memphis
Sunday morning.Her death was the ninth from polio in Memphis this year.Services conducted by Dr.Forrest
FEESOR and Dr.W.L.HOWSE were held at University Baptist Church in Fort Worth Sunday.Burial was in
the Cleburne,Texas Cemetery.Mrs.COBB was stricken August 8th and entered Isolation Hospital the following
day.She was 24.Born in Cleburne,Mrs.COBB had lived in Fort Worth before moving to Dyersburg two years
ago.She was a graduate of Baylor University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary.Besides her
husband she leaves her father,B.Jay JACKSON,Granbury,Texas; her mother,Mrs.Elltn LACKSON,Cleburne; three
sisters,Mrs.Carl D.FERGUSON,Fort Worth,Mrs.J.W.PATTERSON,Cleburne,and Mrs.A.E.BRUNER,Cleburne; three

MRS.JOSIE DUNAVANT..Mrs.Josie DUNAVANT,widow of W.A.DUNAVANT,planter and merchant of Woodville,
Tenn.,died Wednesday at the home of her son,E.V.DUNAVANT in Woodville.She was 85.She lived at Halls
for 10 years but spent most of her life in Woodville.She leaves two other sons,H.M.DUNAVANT,Millington
and A.L.DUNAVANT,Covington; her daughter,Mrs.Mina ADAMS,Memphis; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren.
Services & burial were held Thursday in Woodville.

then toured Portland Oregan,on the coast of Calif.,to visit her daughter,Mrs.Julia WOODY of San Diego.Later to
join her son in Shreveport,La.Mrs.JORDAN was accompanied home by Mr.& Mrs.Steve ATKINSON,and little

SERVICES THURSDAY FOR DROWNING VICTIM..the body of Johnny Alonzo FITZHUGH,ferry boat operator
who drowned Sunday night when he attempted to step from the ferry to a barge,was recovered late Wednesday
afternoon at Midway,Tenn.Mr.FITZHUGH,who was 27 and a veteran of WWII,operated a ferry between Island 21
and the Tennessee side of the Mississippi River.He served three years in the Army,including two in Europe.
He wore five battle stars.He was a member of the Church of Christ.He leaves his brother,J.L.FITZHUGH,Halls;
two half-brothers,James FITZHUGH and Leonard FITZHUGH,both of Halls; two step-sisters,Mrs.Evelyn HEATH,
Halls,and Miss Ruby Mai PRATER,Nashville; and a step-brother,John W.DAVIS of the Army.Services were in
Sudbury Funeral Home,burial in Antioch Cemetery near Friendship.

MIDDLECOFF underwent an operation Monday and is in critical condition at the clinic.Also at her bedside are

I.L.OSBORNE SHOT MONDAY NIGHT..Ivory Lee OSBORNE,operator of a local taxie firm and service station,was
shot and killed on the east end of Main Street Monday night.Sheriff Oscar GRIGGS and Police Chief W.T.SMITH
said the shooting was done by J.C.BRASFIELD,28,local painter,and father of four small children.The Sheriff was
holding BRASFIELD at Ripley for questioning Monday night along with Wilburn NICHOLS,28,of Friendship,and
Marshall SCARBROUGH,24,of Maury City.He said no charges had been filed and the investigation was not
complete.BRASFIELD,NICHOLS,and SCARBROUGH were passengers in one of OSBORNE’s taxis which broke
down at Chestnut Bluff about four miles out of Halls.The driver,Joe SHERIDAN,telephoned for help,and OSBORNE
and another driver drove a second cab to Chestnut Bluff to push the first one to town.Chief SMITH said when the
cabs reached town and let one of the passengers out,the second cab rammed into the back of the first,an argument
followed he said,in which BRASFIELD shot OSBORNE once with a 25 caliber automatic.Mr.OSBORNE,taken to
Baird-Brewer Hospital,Dyersburg,died at 9:15.Mr.OSBORNE,42,was the brother of the late Ernie B.OSBORNE of
Halls,who also was shot and killed on a Halls street about 8 years ago.Mr.OSBORNE leaves his wife,Mrs.Mellie
OSBORNE; three children,Pvt.LaVon OSBORNE of the U.S.Army at Ft.Sheridan,Illinois,Mrs.Phillip GOLDEN of
Union City,Tenn.,Harold OSBORNE of Halls; and his step-mother,Mrs.Lena PARKS of Memphis.Burial in Halls
Cemetery.

MURDER;SUICIDE..The people of Halls were shocked during the weekend to learn that Horace HOWELL had
shot and killed his wife and then committed suicide at their home in Memphis on Friday of last week.Mr.HOWELL

BRASFIELD WAIVES PRELIMINARY HEARING..J.C.BRASFIELD,Halls painter,who is charged with the fatal
shooting of Ivory L.OSBORNE on the streets of Halls Monday night of last week,waived a preliminary hearing
Monday and is being held for the action of the Grand Jury.He is being held in the county jail in Ripley.BRASFIELD
is said to have admitted shooting OSBORNE after a short argument on the east end of Main street.OSBORNE
was the operator of a service station and taxi service here.Wilburn NICHOLS of Friendship and Marshall
SCARBOROUGH of Maury City,who were with BRASFIELD were released last week after paying fines.Neither
is believed to have been implicated in the shooting.

POPLAR GROVE NEWS..Mr.Terry LEONARD has had a lot of bad luck during the past week.Last
Wednesday his wagon was struck by a car on the highway between Lake Lauderdale and Halls,
tearing up the wagon and injuring his back.On Thesday he received word that a car had struck and killed
his brother,Neal LEONARD,at his home in Selmer,Tenn. Mr.& Mrs.LeRoy BECTON had the misfortune to
lose their home to fire. Mr.& Mrs.A.P.BURKS had a birthday dinner with her little neice,Patsy COOK on
November 11th.She was 14.

Church at Forked Deer on Sunday afternoon,December the first at five o’clock.The Rev.C.C.LEWIS of Ripley,
assisted by Rev.W.T.M.JONES of Gates,read the vows before an alter decorated with greenery and white
chrysanthemums.Before the ceremony Mrs.Wymond HURT of Halls and Mrs.Lonnie PEARSON of Forked
Deer presented nuptial music.The bride entered the church with Mr.AKIN,who gave her in marriage.Poised
over white satin,her dress of silk handmade lace,which came from Nottingham in England,was made with a
softly sheared waist and a full skirt which ended in a train at the back.The veil of embroidered white net fell
in graceful folds fron a tiara of net outlined with pearls.She carried a bouquet of white carnations and gladioli
and had as her only ornament a single strand of pearls.As the bridal couple left the church,Floyd Bernice AKIN,
carrying out a typical English custom,presented the bride a silver horse shoe,which her grandfather had sent to
the U.S.to wish her luck in her new home.Miss Ruby AKIN,of Memphis,the groom’s sister was maid of honor,she
wore a pink taffeta formal with an overskirt of blue net and carried an arm bouquet of pink carnations.Miss
Elizabeth AKIN,yoyngest sister of the groom,wearing a blue net formal with a pink satin sash was junior bridesmaid.
Her flowers were pink carnations.Roe MILAM was best man.Ushers were John Welch BAIN and R.W.TURNER.Wilder
PEARSON was junior groomsman.The couple are at home in Halls.They met while he was stationed two years with
the 8th Air Force at Northampton,England.

November at her home following long illness.Funeral arrangements had not been announced Monday,but they
include a short service in Tipton with interment in Murfreesboro,Tenn.Mrs.BIVENS was born at Milan,Tenn.,November
25th,1868 and died on her birth anniversary.Her parents were Robert Yancey & Sara Elizabeth MOORE,of Milan.Mrs.
BIVENS came to Tipton from Nashville,Tenn.six years ago to make her home.She married William F.BIVENS on April

LOCAL HAPPENINGS..William SUGG III,underwent an appendictomey at Baptist Hospital,Memphis.He is reported
doing nicely. Mrs.Elliot STINSON and son,Jimmy,of Louisville,Ky.,spent Thanksgiving with her parents,Mr.&
Mrs.L.M.PETTY. Mrs.Elton JACKSON and Mrs.Frederick HULL of Detroit have returned home after being here
at the bedside of their sister,Mrs.R.E.PETTY of Miami,Fla.Mrs.PETTY came home Monday.Mrs.PETTY,Mrs.
JACKSON and Mrs.HULL,are daughters of Mr.& Mrs.Earl CORLEW. Mr.& Mrs.James CARNELL of Memphis,
spent the weekend with his parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.L.CARNELL. Mr.& Mrs.C.W.SCOTT spent Thanksgiving with
her mother,Mrs.N.D.SALISBURY. Miss Jeanie THURMOND of Memphis has been spending time with her
parents,Mr.& Mrs.F.J.THURMOND,while recovering from a broken arm. Mr.& Mrs.Carlton VADEN and baby
spent Thanksgiving with his parents,Mr.& Mrs.J.M.VADEN.Mr.VADEN is an instructor at the University of
Alabama at Tuscaloosa. Pvts.Curtis HOGGARD and Odell KINNEMOUTH have recently completed basic
training at Fort Bragg,N.C.Curtis expects to be sent to Korea. Miss Marjorie HERRING spent a few days
with her sister,Mrs.Bill WEAVER & Mr.WEAVER in Griffin,Ga. Mr.& Mrs.WEAVER are proud parents of a baby girl.

FRIENDSHIP MAN DIED IN ATLANTA FIRE..Services for Willard Franklin JONES,21-year-old son of Mrs.Edna
YORK JONES,of Friendship,who,according to reports received by relatives,perished following a leap from an
eighth floor window during the Winecoff Hotel fire in Atlanta Saturday morning,were at the Methodist Church in
Friendship Monday afternoon.JONES leaped as the heat became unbearable.His companion,James LITTLE of
Elizabethton,who had accompanied him to Atlanta for the weekend,remained in the room until he was rescued
by fireman.An ambulance from Evans & Lassiter Funeral brought JONES’ body from Atlanta.T.R.SANDERS,cousin
of the victim accompanied the ambulance.He was employed at Oak Ridge,JONES was the son of the late Dr.H.
JONES and grandson of Dr.J.B.JONES.Other survivors are Miss Carrie Mae JONES of Friendship and Mrs.Leon
BYASSE,sisters.

NEW GRANDSON..Mrs.W.C.VIAR,Sr. of Halls received word Tuesday that she has a new grandson,born Monday
night to Mr.& Mrs.Dewitt VIAR of Columbia,Tenn.He weighed 10lbs4ozs and is named James Dewitt VIAR.

PATSY DAWS,NEIL DYER INJURED IN CAR WRECK..Patsy DAWS,daughter of Mrs.N.S.DAWS and member of
Halls High School,and Neil DYER,Jr.,son of Mrs.T.N.DYER,were seriously injured about 10:30 Tuesday night
when the car they were riding in crashed into the rear of a stalled truck just south of the Forked Deer river
bridge on Highway 51.Both were carried to Baird-Brewer General Hospital,Dyersburg.Miss DAWS suffered a
compound fracture of her left arm,serious cuts under one eye and on her nose and numerous other cuts and
bruises.Mr.DYER suffered a slight brain concussion and many cuts.Frank BALDRIDGE,who was also in the car
suffered only slight cuts.

GATES LANDMARK BURNED SATURDAY..The old John PENNINGTON two story house about two miles west
of Gates was destroyed by fire Saturday afternoon.The house was occupied by Mr.& Mrs.F.T.BEARD.Most
of their household furnishings were destroyed.

performed in Hernando,Miss.Attending the ceremony were:Miss Virginia SWEENEY,Memphis,Miss Maxine
ESKRIDGE & Joffre HERRING of Halls.Mr.ESKRIDGE is a veteran of WWII having served as a gunner and
radio operator on a B-24 bomber.He is a graduate of Halls High School and is employed by Vaden Furniture
Co.Mrs.ESKRIDGE attended Jackson,Miss.schools and was employed by First National Bank,Memphis at
the time of her marriage.

FRANK McWILLIAMS DROWNED SUNDAY..Dragging crews were working the Old River bottoms west of here
Sunday night in search of the body of Frank McWILLIAMS,38-year-old Curve farmer,who is believed to have
drowned when his boat capsized Sunday afternoon.Mr.McWILLIAMS and two neighbors,Arthur CARMACK and
Herman WEBB were duck-hunting in the skiff when it overturned.CARMACK & WEBB managed to swim to safety
but were unable to rescue their companion they said.Born in Hardeman County,he moved to Lauderdale County
20 years ago.He saw overseas service in the war.He is the son of Mr.& Mrs.J.F.McWILLIAMS of Curve and
husband of the former Miss Lucille PARKER.
